Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 Announces Highlights: Extensive Public Program and Strong Asia-Pacific Focus

Art Basel Hong Kong returns March 28-30, 2025 (Preview Days: March 26-27) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), featuring 240 galleries from 42 countries and territories. This edition emphasizes the dynamic Asia-Pacific art scene with a robust public program alongside its gallery presentations.

Key Highlights:
  • Global Participation, Regional Focus: 240 galleries, with over half from the Asia-Pacific region, will present a diverse range of artistic practices.
  • Encounters: Large-Scale Installations: Curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, the Encounters sector will showcase 18 large-scale installations exploring themes of cultural resonance, abstraction, and the digital realm. A key offsite installation, Monster Chetwynd’s Lanternfly Ballet, will be presented at Pacific Place, supported by Swire Properties.
  • Kabinett: Thematic Presentations: A record 36 Kabinett presentations will feature focused solo projects, with a strong emphasis on artists from the Asia-Pacific region and the Asian diaspora.
  • MGM Discoveries Art Prize: This inaugural award will recognize and support emerging artists, with a shortlist of three artists and a jury of international experts.
  • Extensive Public Program: A week-long program of free events includes:
  • Film Program: Curated by Para Site, the program, titled ‘In Space, It’s Always Night’, will feature seven screenings and works by 30 artists, exploring themes of ecological interdependence and technological realities. Collaborations with Nowness Asia and Videotage will further enrich the program.
  • Conversations Program: Leading figures from the art world and beyond will engage in discussions on topics ranging from Southeast Asian patronage and AI to the intersection of art, design, and architecture.
  • Exchange Circle: This platform will host short presentations and discussions on contemporary art and architecture.
  • Collaborations and Partnerships: Art Basel Hong Kong collaborates with key cultural institutions including M+ and Tai Kwun for offsite programming. A co-commissioned work by Ho Tzu Nyen, Night Charades, will illuminate the M+ Facade. New cultural partners include Design Trust, HASS Lab, and Tomorrow Maybe.
  • Art Basel Shop: For the first time, the Art Basel Shop will offer a selection of lifestyle products.
Encounters Details:
Curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, ‘As the World Turns’ will feature 18 large-scale installations across four platforms: Passage, Alteration, Charge, and The Return. Highlights include works by Pacita Abad, Christopher K. Ho, Lu Yang, Frank Wang Yefeng, and Vajiko Chachkhiani.

Kabinett Details:
36 galleries will participate in Kabinett, showcasing solo projects with a focus on Asia-Pacific artists. Highlights include presentations of works by Martin Wong, Liu Dan, Li Jin, Yang Jiechang, Ann Leda Shapiro, Vũ Dân Tân, Takahiro Kondo, and Pei Yanqing.

Film Program Details:
Curated by Para Site, ‘In Space, It’s Always Night’ explores themes inspired by Isadora Neves Marques’ Vampires in Space. The program features works by artists including Chulayarnnon Siriphol, Carlos Motta, Sung Tieu, Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings, and Cao Shu. Videotage will present works by Hong Kong-based artists, while Nowness Asia presents ‘Ghostly Metaphors’.

Conversations Program Details:
The Conversations program will address topics such as artists' engagement with AI, evolving arts patronage in Southeast Asia, and the relationship between art, design, and architecture.

Museum Shows and Institutional Events:
Visitors can also experience exhibitions and programming at various Hong Kong museums and cultural institutions, including M+, Tai Kwun, Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Hong Kong Museum of Art, and more.
