The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) have exposed a fake eGovPH hack claim on the Breach Forums. The incident highlights the importance of verifying information from online forums and underscores the need for strong cybersecurity measures.
The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) have issued a warning about a recent fake eGovPH hack claim posted on the Breach Forums. The incident serves as a reminder to exercise caution when reviewing data breach information on online forums.
CICC Executive Director Alexander K. Ramos confirmed that the alleged eGovPH data breach is a hoax perpetrated by a scammer known as GR3GGM3RC3R. The scammer attempted to defraud forum members by falsely claiming to have access to sensitive data.
David Almirol, Undersecretary for E-Government at the DICT, reassured the public that the eGovPH app is protected by multiple security measures, including encryption and eGovChain security. He emphasized that the additional security layer of attached keys makes it impossible for unauthorized individuals to access sensitive data.
The Breach Forums is a notorious dark web platform used by cybercriminals to trade stolen data and illicit digital goods. The platform’s reputation for facilitating illegal activities has made it a target for law enforcement and cybersecurity experts.
In response to the fake eGovPH hack claim, Breach Forums banned the user GR3GGM3RC3R for scamming. The scammer’s modus operandi involves intimidating victims by falsely claiming to have access to personal information.
Both the CICC and DICT are urging the public to be vigilant and to avoid falling victim to scams. They also emphasize the importance of strong cybersecurity measures and international cooperation to combat cybercrime.
