Huawei continues to release new phones and develop interesting devices. Aside from the solid fans of the brand and Huawei's unique line of products, another thing that kept this tech giant above water is its own app store called the Huawei AppGallery.
The Huawei AppGallery is the official app market on Huawei smartphones and comes in preloaded. Currently the 3rd biggest app distribution platform, the AppGallery has around 180 billion downloads and 390 million active users on a monthly basis. Anchoring on security and privacy, the AppGallery also boasts a whole lot more, but what is inside the Huawei AppGallery?
Apps
As the Huawei AppGallery grows bigger every day. They are adding more apps and games on their list for users to enjoy. If you quickly browse the list you can see that it spotlights top and local apps that are useful and used regularly. Right now, because of the Extended Community Quarantine, TikTok is topping the local apps along with communication apps like Viber, banking apps, and other local apps!
Unionbank and SSS also are on the AppGallery together with the following:
Online Banking - BDO, Eastwest Bank, Cash, PayMaya,
Finance - Investagrams, PesoLoans, Cashalo,
Gaming - Asphalt 9, Creative Destruction Mobile Royale, Rise Kingdom
Social Media - TikTok, Facebook, Viber
News - GMA, ANS CBN News, CNN
Entertainment - Booky, GMovies, ClickTheCity, Platinum Songbook
Government - PCSO, SSS
Travel - OWTO, Philippine Airlines,
Shopping and Rewards - BeautyMNL, Lazada, SM Advantage Card, Robinsons Rewards, Rustans FSP, GlobeOne, Globe Rewards, CLiQQ by7-Eleven,
As for the Map, I know we've all gotten used to Google Maps for navigation, but recently, a collaboration has pushed thru and the HERE WeGo Map app is now available in the AppGallery as well. (Read more about it here - https://www.mixofeverything.net/2020/04/here-wego-map-is-now-available-in-Huawei-AppGallery-Google-Maps-Alternative.html)
Here are some other top apps in the AppGallery: Booking.com, Lazada, Camera 360, Lazada-Online Shopping & Deals, Shopee, SHAREit, SnapChat, Merriam Webster Dictionary, Speed Test, Agoda, WeChat, Klook, WeSing, PhotoGrid, Booky, iFlix, WPS, MetroBank, Union Bank Online, Viu, Trivago, Traveloka, Wattpad, Meralco, Canva, AliExpress etc.
Now, I know there are still apps in the Huawei AppGallery that are still missing. Don't worry, they are coming. Huawei said that they are working with developers and designers to bring our favorite apps in the AppGallery soon!.
If you're itching to get your usual apps, you must know that there are some ways on how you can have apps from your previous phones to your new Huawei Device. You can use Huawei's own Phone Clone app. This process will transfer most of the apps from previous phones to your shiny new one.
This is from the App, APK Pure. |
If there are still some apps you can't get via this transfer, you can explore a third-party app repository like APKPure, where you can download up-to-date APK files. Here you can also explore and download new apps that you can't find on the AppGallery. But please know that the apps on APKPure, are not verified to work without the Google Services Framework on the phones. So there are some that really work and some that don't (for now). If you're thinking if this is safe, I would have to say it is. Your phone checks the downloaded apk file if it is safe or not before you would install it.
As of writing this article, I'm able to download and use Google Chrome. If you think you can't use Google services, you can actually. You can still sign-in manually via the Chrome app or any browser to browse YouTube or check your Gmail.
Safe and Secure
The Huawei AppGallery is also big in its security measures. Huawei shares that they prioritize security above all else. Huawei shared that they have comprehensive four-layer detection security that ensures all user data is contained within the device, and every app installation is screened for threats without exemption. The app also features strict security detection such as malicious behavior detection, privacy check, security vulnerability scanning, and the manual real-name security check, to ensure the apps featured on AppGallery platform are safe for users.
Rewards
What's also cool about the AppGallery is that they have exclusive content, welcome gifts, in-game events, and rewards inside the AppGallery. They give out special points, app vouchers, gift packs, VIP privileges, and other incentives that are totally different from other app distribution platforms.
Here's how you can claim gifts from the Huawei AppGallery:
Step 1: Log in your HUAWEI ID
Step 2: Open “HUAWEI AppGallery”
Step 3: Tap on the “Me” icon at the bottom right
Step 4: Enter “Gift”
Step 5: Browse the gift list and claim.
Thoughts
Alright, I may be nit-picking here, but one thing that bothers me a bit on the AppGallery is their search bar, they always have a suggested app on the search bar and it changes after a few seconds. Then if you tap on the search and click the magnifying glass on your keyboard, it searches whatever is randomly suggested in the search bar. But if you type, the suggested app will disappear. While the search bar results provide you with the app (if it's in the AppGallery) and other suggestions, it's not always accurate and sometimes it gives you a weird result with app suggestions that are far from the category.
There's no denying that Huawei AppGallery still has some more apps lacking, but its continuously and rapidly growing. If you browse the AppGallery, you can see that there are a lot of apps already available and constantly updated. I don't necessarily think that there's a disadvantage really but a good opportunity for Huawei to grow. In my opinion, the Huawei AppGallery is in a good position right now and it's starting to deliver more diversified content.
Yes, we might be missing the convenience of getting all our apps on one source but once you get past that, it's like owning any other android phone. You'd be surprised how you can easily function even without the Google Mobile Services pre-installed on your device. I've shifted from my Hauwei P20 Pro and currently using the Huawei P40 Pro and I can still use the apps and still be productive on my new Huawei device with no major adjustment. If you think having just the AppGallery is a deal-breaker, think again.
